STAINLESS STEELS

A stainless steel, according to the definition of standard NF EN 10020, is a steel that contains a minimum of 10.5% chromium and a maximum of 1.2% carbon.

MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEELS

  • These are steels that contain:
    • Up to 1.2% carbon
    • 12% to 18% chromium
  • Temperable
    • Corrosion resistance is attained by hardening and tempering by heat treatment (oxidisable in the annealed state)
  • Moderate corrosion resistance
  • High hardness

PRECIPITATION HARDENING MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEELS

  • From the martensitic steels family
    • These are steels that contain: Between 15% and 17% chromium
  • They have undergone a specific treatment to allow a precipitation of, for example, copper-rich (AISI 630) or titanium-rich (Xm16) compounds

FERRITIC STAINLESS STEELS

  • These are steels that contain:
    • Carbon: < 0.1 %
    • Chromium content of
      • 11 to 14% “low-alloy”
      • 15 to 18 % non-stabilised
      • 16 to 20 % stabilised
      • 18 to 20 % containing molybdenum (1 to 2%) for better corrosion resistance
      • 22 to 25 % “with a very high chromium content”
      • > 25 % “super-ferritic” with up to 3 % molybdenum: these steels have enhanced corrosion resistance in neutral chlorinated environments (sea water, for example). The addition of nickel (up to 4 %) improves their toughness.
    • “Refractory” ferritic steels (with 14 to 20 % chromium) used for high temperatures (dry corrosion), most of which have niobium added to improve creep resistance. Some grades also have aluminium added.

AUSTENITIC-FERRITIC DUPLEX STEELS

These steels have an approximately equal mixture of ferrite and austenite.

Better mechanical properties than those of austenitic or ferritic stainless steels, while retaining an elongation A% of around 40 %

  • Duplex steels without molybdenum with:
    • 20 to 23 % chromium, 1 to 4 % nickel and 0.12 to 0.3 % nitrogen
  • Duplex steels with molybdenum with:
    • 22 % chromium
    • 1.5 to 3 % molybdenum
    • 0.5 to 0.25 % nitrogen.
    • Suitable for corrosive environments (petroleum, gas, sea water, desalination, wood pulp, chemicals and petrochemicals, etc.).
  • Super duplex grades
    • Minimum of 25 % chromium
    • 6 to 7 % nickel
    • 3.5 to 4 % molybdenum
    • 0.25 à 0.4 % nitrogen
    • These grades may have additional tungsten and/or copper added. They are intended for use in highly corrosive environments such as mineral chemistry, umbilical systems and warm sea water.
